Travel Bugs

A travel bug is an object you leave in a geocache.  It has a dog tag that allows you to track its movments on a website.  The Buckeye Tiger was released during Summer 2005 in the "Hippies and Hoboes cache" in People's Park, Berkeley, California.  The picture below was taken by a geocacher from a boat in San Francisco Bay.  The Golden Gate Bridge can be seen in the background.  Travel bugs are tracked through the serial number on the metal tag at the geocaching website http://geocaching.com .  The travel bug, Buckeye Tigers, has been logged 25 times and has traveled over 1100 miles since it was released.  It was last seen somewhere in Colorado.

Send Your Den to Alcatraz

Travel bugs are easily incorporated into den or pack activities which satisfy several of the requirements for the Geography Academic Pin.  A travel bug costs about $2.00 and may be ordered online through

Releasing a travel bug involves:
  1. Finding an object to attach to the tracking tag
  2. Thinking of a name for the bug, e.g. Buckeye Tigers
  3. Deciding on the bug's mission, e.g Search, Discover, Share
  4. Placing the bug in a geocache
  5. Logging the release at http://geocaching.com
By choosing the right mission, you can send your Tiger Den to Alcatraz or your Den Leader to Disney World, or your Committee to Fargo, North Dakota, or your Cubmaster to Tahiti . . . the possibilities are endless.

Travelbugs and Google Earth

Track of Buckeye Tiger around SF Bay area If your computer has Google Earth installed, you can download and view the "track" of a travel bug from the geocaching.com website.  The image at the left shows the movement of Buckeye Tiger about the San Francisco Bay area.

Click on the picture to view the full track in Google Earth.  Your computer needs to have Google Earth installed for this to work!!!!!

If your computer doesn't have Google Earth installed, you can download and install it from here . . . . it's free!

RocketScout is a patch from the 2006 Buckeye District Cubscout daycamp held in Worthington on June 10, 11 in Worthington, Ohio. We launched water rockets, model rockets, rode a hovercraft, and made ice cream in a plastic bag. We do travel bugs to learn about geography and other countries. Rocket Scout was released in Venice, Italy and traveled to London via Northfield, MN. Last seen in Malta (winter 2007).

C-30-05 was released as part of a presentation on geocaching during the 2005 Woodbadge Course at Camp Falling Rock. It's goal was to travel to Gilwell Park, a location of great significance to Woodbadgers.  To speed it on its way, it was given to a friend who lives in Germany.  It spent the next three years visiting friends in Hannover.  It went active again on Sept. 4, 2007.
