Geocaching Activities for Scouts

Geocaching is a treasure hunt using the internet and a GPS receiver instead of a map.  Enthusiasts will hide caches of interesting things and publish their GPS coordinates on a website http://geocaching.com.  Other geocachers will look up the location of caches near where they live or travel and go vist them.

What's in a Geocache?

The most important and essential item in a geocache is the logbook, together with pens and pencils.  Visitors write their visit in the book.  They will normally append a similar report as their "log" on the geocaching.com website.  The contents of a geocache will change, as people visit it, take things out, and put other things in.  Many include an instant camera, so that visitors can take a picture of themselves.  Other items might include small toys and "fluffy animals" to appeal to a wide audience.

Good Etiquette

If you take something from a cache, leave something in its place for others to find.  Bring a back to pick up litter as you hike into the cache area.  Take the litter out when you leave. Practice Leave No Trace.  It's usually not necessary to search off trail to find a cache.

Sign the logbook and log your visit on geocaching.com

Cache In/Trash Out

Geocachers practice their own version of Leave no Trace. It's called Cache In/Trash Out.  When a geocacher hikes into an area to search for a cache, they will bring along a bag to collect litter from the trail and the cache area.  When they leave, they take the trash out for proper disposal.

Tiger Den Cache
Map to Tiger Den Cache
The Tiger Den cache is maintained by Pack 365 in Worthington.  It's located along the Olentangy Bike path.  If you go looking for this cache, be sure to bring a tiger along.  You may need one.  This cache contains classic scout patches and other interesting things -- some scout related, some not.

Remember:  If you take something, be sure to leave something behind for the next person.  As you walk into the cache, be sure to bring a bag along to pick up litter from the park.  Sign the guest book and log your visit at

Luckily there were no muggles around or I woulod have looked pretty silly getting the cache.
