The
Final Bulletin
Boy Scouts
When: Friday, April 18 through
Where: The
Who: Scouts and Venture Crews of Buckeye District and their leaders are invited to attend.
Please note that BSA National Scouting rules require that
all Troops and Crews must have two-deep adult (over 21) leadership. This includes Patrols on the Trail, plan
accordingly.
Pre Registration: Due to the nature of this Program, Units have been requested to pre-register each Patrol participating by April 1. If you have not Pre Registered and still wish to participate please contact us immediately.
Registration: Units should plan to arrive on Friday night to avoid missing out on the program Saturday morning and have the completed Registration Form (attached) ready to be turned in.
The Camporee fee is $8.00 for all Scouts, Crew members, and Scouters. This covers all activities, a patch for each participant and a ribbon for each unit.
Those arriving on Saturday should check in before
A Local Tour Permit will need to be filed with the
As usual, we will need adult and older Scout volunteers to help with the staffing for the program activities. Please plan to identify adults and Scouts who will be helping at registration.
Crackerbarrel: Each Unit should be represented at the Friday evening Crackerbarrel to get final instructions and changes and to have any program questions answered. Troop and Crew adult leaders and one or two Scout leaders should attend.
Immediately following the Crackerbarrel, the program staff will have a short meeting to handle last minute details. Unit adults and older Scouts who are helping with the program should attend.
Camping and Parking: Camping for all units is at Camp Site K. Parking is adjacent to each camp site but units are encouraged to ride share as much as possible since parking is somewhat limited.
For Safety reasons we are asking Unit Leaders to restrict any further movement of unit vehicles to Emergency Travel Only once the unit has been assigned a campsite and the vehicles parked. All transportation in support of Saturday’s event will be provided by and at the direction of the District Staff.
Units should plan to use stoves for cooking. Ground fires are permissible but in designated fire locations. Fire wood will be provided by AEP. Gasoline stoves and lanterns, under the supervision of an adult, are allowed. The Council rules must be followed. Extra fuel must be locked up.
Latrines are available near the campsites. Garbage may be left in the campsite trash cans or dumpsters.
Water may be limited and may taste bad. Please bring full water jugs from home. We will arrange to refill them during the camporee if necessary.
For reasons of safety, straight blade sheath or hunting knives and double-bit axes will not be permitted.
As always, the Scout Oath and Law should guide our conduct. All Scouts should remain in their own camp area after taps and until reveille.
Program: This event is a hiking and trail building / trail improvement service project on the Buckeye Trail. We will work in conjunction with the Buckeye Trail Association. Units, Troops and Patrols will hike either a 5+ mile or 10 mile section of the Buckeye Trail – their choice -- and do at least a 2-hour service project under the direction of Buckeye Trail Association Volunteers and Buckeye District leaders. Patrols will be assigned a service project and location along the Buckeye Trail based on the patrol’s ability to work on trail improvements and hiking ability as indicated by the Unit Scoutmaster on the pre-registration form.
Tools for trail building and all construction materials
will be provided by the Buckeye Trail Association.
Each Scout and Scouter will be required to hike approximately 5+ or 10 Miles with a daypack or backpack using map and compass. Each Scout and Scouter daypack should contain the following:
· Two (2) quarts of water (may be checked)
· Lunch and trail snacks
· Clothing for the expected weather
· Work Gloves
· Pruning Shears or Loppers (if possible)
· 2 garbage bags (per patrol)
GOOD hiking shoes are a must. Boots are preferred. In addition you may be asked to carry some trail building tools and supplies needed for your assigned service project. Carrying tents or other camping supplies is not required.
OA Tap-out: Saturday night’s Campfire Program will also include the OA Tap-out.
First Aid & Emergencies: First Aid support will be available in the Headquarters area and at strategic areas along the trail. Troop Leaders should have medical release/history for each Scout.
Leave-No-Trace & Checkout: Each Unit must check out with the Leave-No-Trace committee before leaving the camporee.
When your campsite has been completely cleaned and all equipment removed, send the Senior Patrol Leader to request final inspection. (Details at Saturday night’s Crackerbarrel.)
Patches and ribbons will be distributed after the Leave-No-Trace checkout.
Units that must leave early must make arrangements with the Camporee Chairman before leaving.

April 18 -20,
2008
Unit Leader Notes: It is about a two (2) hour drive from
northwest
We ask that Scouts
wear at least “Class B” uniforms during the day, but proper clothing is
necessary. GOOD hiking shoes are a must. Boots are preferred.
There may be no
water on the trail. Make sure each of
your Scouts and Scouters have a full 2 quarts of water!
The service project areas
will be assigned to your patrols based on the skill level of your hikers, ages
and size of patrol from the “We’re Coming” pre-registration form returned by April 1. Please check the District web site for any
changes or last minute notices to the Final Bulletin.
Trail and Bridge
Building Tools will be provided by the Buckeye Trail Association. However, units are requested to bring
Pruners, Loppers and small folding saws for each patrol. Additionally each patrol should bring 2 trash
bags for a No Trace Trail Clean Up during Saturday’s hike. Trash Bags can be dropped off at Trails end
or other designated locations during the hike.
Transportation to
the trailhead or end point will be required for some patrols both morning and
afternoon. We have made arrangements for
a bus to do limited drop-off and pick-up, but if your unit has access to a van
or other vehicle and you’re willing to assist with transportation please
contact us.
This
program will require a large staff.
Please plan to provide one or more adults and older scouts help the
District staff with the program. Please identify them at registration. This provides a great opportunity for your
older Scouts to participate in the program and be recognized.
