Offhand shooting stance
The Offhand Shooting Stance

The Offhand Shooting Stance is said to be the most difficult of all the shooting positions. As a result of a very small floor area and a very high center of gravity, both the body and the rifle are subjected to considerable movement. The standing position requires a highly perfected firing technique, a properly balanced body, perfect rifle positioning, and non-dominant mental control over the neuromuscular systems.

Scouts and Scouters are invited to participate in the 3rd annual Ken and June Smith Memorial Shoot sponsored by Crew 45 and the Powder Room.  The shoot will be divided into two age groups, those under 21 and those that are 21 and over.  Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews can also enter a 3 youth shooting team.  For more details see the flyer, our event page, or the Crew 45 website.

Venture Crew 45 is chartered by the Powder Room in Powell and meets every other Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Meetings typically feature NRA safety instruction and shooting time on the range.   If you're interested in learning more about firearm safety or marksmanship, contact Chris Morris to visit one of  our meetings.

WFA patch Red Cross Wilderness First Aid
Saturday, Sunday Feb. 28, Mar. 1

WFA patch

"Wilderness First Aid" is a Red Cross First Aid Course with an emphasis on outdoor situations.  The certification lasts three years.  All Philmont crews must have at least one member who is certified in Wilderness First Aid!  Cost of the course is $60 and you must be at least 14 to participate.

According to the Wilderness Safety Council, there are three major differences between backwoods and street emergencies:

transit backwoods accidents occur more than an hour from the hospital
resources wilderness rescuers must improvise a response from what is in their backpack, their experience and their knowledge
environment proper sanitation, lighting, and termperature regulation do not exist in the great outdoors.
A wilderness first aid course is a comprehensive lesson in how to react, respond, and save life in remote, life threatening situations.

Note:   If you're not able to attend the  WFA course at the end of this month,  Dublin ADC,  Jim Jaeger has a line on one that is being organized for  August 22-23.  See his article on the Google Group.
