Exterior of a Quinzhee

Building
a Quinzhee
From
Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia:
A
quinzhee or quinzee is a
shelter made by hollowing out a pile of
settled snow. This is in contrast to an igloo, which is made
from blocks of snow.
To
construct a quinzhee, locate a flat area where snow is in abundance.
Pile snow toits desired height (typically 6-10 feet).
After piling the snow, the site should be left for up to
several hours while the snow sets, making excavation possible.
Before excavating, one can put sticks in the roof and wall,
approximately 10" deep to be used as a guide when digging out the
interior. After this is completed one digs until the sticks
are reached.
|
Building
a
quinzhee is a common winter camping activity for Okpik trainings and
scout troops in northern states like Minnesota and Wisconsin.
It's a great way to use up all the snow you just shoveled off
your driveway. For
details and additional information, see the Wikipedia
article.
Note: JLOW and Baloo
Training are also canceled/postponed for today. See the Google
Group for details

Make a Snow Angel

North
Dakota holds the world record for the most snow angles made
simultaneously in one place. The record was set when 8962
snow

are particularly striking after a snowfall. This trail

You
can hike the creeks, just
make sure your boots are watertight and you're not far from someplace
warm if
when you get wet. Cell phones are not recommended for this
activity unless they're water resistant. |

Delaware VLSC Training
Postponed
| According to Marilyn Clark, the
VLSC event scheduled by Delaware District for this weekend has been
postponed due to bad weather. If you're traveling this
weekend, please drive carefully. |
 |
If you've planned your weekend
around this event, may we suggest a day of snow sculpture instead? |

The
Offhand Shooting Stance
The Offhand
Shooting Stance is said to be the most difficult
of all the shooting positions. As a
result of a very small floor area and a very high center of gravity,
both the body and the rifle are subjected to considerable movement. The
standing position requires a highly perfected firing technique, a
properly balanced body, perfect rifle positioning, and non-dominant
mental control over the neuromuscular systems.

To improve the QUALITY of
program in every unit
in America

|
February 15:
Centennial
Quality Unit
Commitments Due
The
Centennial Quality Awards program is designed to recognize
units,
districts, councils, areas, and regions in achieving excellence
in
providing a quality program to a growing youth population
in America at
all levels of the Boy Scouts of America. |
From the starting point above,
the Boy Scout's strategic
plan and description of the Quality Unit program covers over
ten pages with no illustrations. In a nutshell, Quality Unit
is about
 |
- Setting goals for your pack or
troop at the beginning of the year. The emphasis for 2008 is recruiting adult volunteers.
- Making a plan to achieve your
goals.
- Tracking your progress.
- Getting feedback and making
adjustments so you reach your goals.
|
At
this point in the program, your unit should be working with its unit
commissioner to identify goals for 2008. There's paperwork
to fill
out and a deadline (Feb.
15)
to help you focus your efforts. Use this
as an opportunity to get an outside perspective and fresh ideas for
your program.
In 2007, over 60% of the scout units in Buckeye
District earned the Quality Unit award and helped Buckeye District earn
the Quality District award for the first time in seven years.
Update:
At February Roundtable, Buckeye District
Commissioner, Tom Reynolds, said that the deadline for unit commitment
forms was March 7. The District and Council calendars both
say Feb. 15. In either case, it's probably best begin a
discussion with your unit commissioner if you have not already started.
