District
Award Dinner
The
Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner is February 9, 2008 at the Covenant
Presbyterian Church.
Please take the time to complete the Award
Recommendation Form
for a Volunteer who has rendered service to a Cub Pack, Scout Troop,
Venture Crew, or District during the year. This is your way
to
say "Thank You" to a leader who has devoted their time and energy to
serving the youth of the District.
Detailed information is available here
on the District website, but the critical dates are:
Silver
Beaver nominations must be turned in by Nov. 1
The
Monopoly card (upper left) describes a situation the district committee
would like to change. In the past, scouters who were invited
to
the District Recognition Dinner had to pay for their meals.
This
year the recognition dinner will feature a Silent Auction whose
proceeds
are intended to subsidize the cost of attending future
recognition dinners. Among the items being auctioned are a
week
at a fishing cabin on Lake Erie. Scouters wanting additional
information or having items they would like to donate to the auction
should contact Chris
Morris.

Den
Chief Training
December 2, 2007
There is an excruciatingly bureaucratic description of a Den
Chief's qualifications and responsibilities at http://www.scouting.org.
The short story is that a Den Chief is a scout, usually age
13 or over, who works with a Cub Scout Pack or Den. This is a
formal position. Den Chiefs are jointly appointed by the
Pack's Cubmaster and the Scout's Scoutmaster. Successful
service as Den Chief counts as a Troop position for rank advancement.
Serving as Den Chief is a great way for a Scout to represent his troop
and encourage cub scouts to continue in scouting. Because of
the importance of this position, training is required.
Reservations
must be received by November 26, 2007.

GALLOWAY
TOWNSHIP - The pumpkin was go for launch.
In the midst of a steady downpour Saturday, Glenn Battschinger placed
the orange projectile in its slingshot-like cradle. Two Boy Scouts
wearing rain slickers took their places by the trebuchet rope. A
half-dozen parents, under the cover of an awning at the old Assumption
School on the White Horse Pike, steadied their video and digital
cameras. A videographer, documenting the event for the annual World
Championship Punkin Chunkin, lifted the towel from his camera equipment
and prepared to film . . . . more

Friends of Scouting Campaign
The annual Friends of Scouting
Campaign is an opportunity for communities, businesses, and families to
support scouting in Central Ohio. During the months of
November through March, each Pack, Troop, Crew, and Post should
schedule a Family Friends of Scouting Presentation. This presentation
explains to parents how our council is financed and educates them about
our programs and facilities.
Printable, PDF copies of the Unit Signup Form, Council FOS
Brochure, and the FOS Presenter training schedule are linked below.
Help support Buckeye District by scheduling or giving an FOS
presentation for your unit and by making an FOS donation.

The annual Jewish Scouts Religious Award Workshop is coming up on
Sunday November 11, from 2:30 to 4:00 at the Leo
Yassenoff Jewish Community Center, 1125 College Avenue
in Bexley. All scouts, including Cubs, Tigers, Brownies, all the way
through Senior Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are welcome to come and get
started on the Jewish Religious award appropriate to their rank. There
are probably one or two Jewish scouts in most units, so please let your
scouts know about this opportunity to earn their religious award.
Last week the
organizers of the District Tiger Day event informed the District
Committee that an additional 15 volunteers were needed to properly
staff the event. As of last night's Roundtable, Tiger Day was
fully staffed. If you know anyone who is volunteering for
this event, please take a moment to thank them for their efforts.

While bullwhips are not
approved by the Guide
to Safe Scouting,
Tiger Day will have plenty of chairs available for aspiring
tiger tamers.

Standby power, also called Vampire
power,
refers to electric power consumed by electronic devices in a standby
mode. A very common "electricity vampire" is a power adaptor
built on a plug with no power switch. While this consumption
of
power is used to provide functions for appliances such as remote
controls and digital clocks, most of the power is considered wasted.
According to a study done at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,
standby power consumption accounted for approximately 5% of total
electricity consumption in America, "adding up to more than $3 billion
in annual energy costs".
Scouts working on the National Conservation award, can check their
homes for appliances, television sets, phone chargers that use standby
power and unplug them when they're not in use. See Wikipedia
for more information and links to resources.

Silver
Beaver Medal
Silver Beaver Nomination Simon
Kenton Council Boy
Scouts of America
2007
Deadline for Nominations is Nov. 1, 2007
The
Silver
Beaver Award
is the council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of
America. Simon Kenton Council awards this
recognition
to registered adult
leaders
who have made
an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council
to
those who implement the
Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self
sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service
to those
who do not actively seek it.
According
to Buckeye District Director, Jan Berry, "Simon Kenton Council currently
has no one nominated for this award". She adds
that the nomination "can
be done in less than a week." It's possible,
even likely that Jan is trying to give us all a big hint -- the
nomination form may be downloaded here.
Scouters interested in additional information can contact Jan
through the Scout Office at 614-436-7200.
