Birdie Rocket

Area 51 |
Area 51 is an
airforce base maintained by the US government for development and
testing of advanced aircraft. Reports that it is also a government center for
the storage, examination, and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft are
strictly urban legend. Nevertheless, the Camp Planners advise Den
Leaders to do careful nosecounts of campers when entering and leaving
this area. We want no unplanned alien abductions.
Our Area 51 will have water and
air rockets to keep the scouts amused while the staff help them build
and fly a small scale model rocket based on a badminton birdie.
At District Daycamp we'll be taking racquet sports to new
heights. If your camper attended last year's daycamp and if
his/her rocket is still in one piece, bring it along to this year's
camp and we'll fly it.
Why do we do rockets at Daycamp? Because the Camp
Director, Al Magnuson, is a committed born again rocketeer and
scouting is about sharing the things you enjoy with kids.

A Born
Again Rocketeer (BAR) is a person who started out in model rocketry in
their "younger" days, dropped out of the hobby for some reason and then
came to their senses and got back into it.
|
Activity Staff
Troop 123 will be running the launch area for the second year
in a row. Several Boy Scouts will
help the campers prep and launch their rockets.
 |
The Camp and Program directors strongly deny the rumor that the boy scout
assistants will be wearing dealy boppers to fit into the activity
theme. We weren't able to find them on ebay. |
We're looking for a crafty person, sound of lung and limb, to lead construction of the birdie
rockets. Don't worry, these rockets are easy enough for even
parents to build. The parts are all precut and the rockets
are assembled using low temperature glue guns.
